Family & Childcare

Raising kids in Japan can be a great experience, but the system is different from most Western countries. Here's how to navigate daycare, schools, healthcare, and parental support.

Birth Registration & Citizenship

  • Birth must be registered at the ward office within 14 days of birth.
  • MOFA Birth Registration Info
  • Children of foreign parents in Japan are not automatically Japanese citizens. Register with your home country's embassy.

Government Support

Daycare (Hoikuen / Yochien)

  • Hoikuen (δΏθ‚²εœ’) - Daycare for working parents, ages 0-5. Subsidized public ones are competitive.
  • Yochien (εΉΌη¨šεœ’) - Kindergarten, ages 3-5, half-day. Less work-friendly.
  • Kodomoen (γ“γ©γ‚‚εœ’) - Combined hoikuen and yochien.
  • Apply through your ward/city office. Application timing varies by city.
