Before You Go β
- Research your visa type - Figure out which visa category fits your situation before anything else. Visa & Immigration
- Start learning Japanese basics - Even a little goes a long way. Greetings, numbers, and basic phrases will make your first weeks much smoother. Language Resources
- Research housing options - Start browsing listings early so you know what to expect in terms of costs and layouts. Housing
- Understand the healthcare system - Japan has universal healthcare, but you'll want to know how enrollment works before you arrive. Healthcare
- Budget and banking - Get a clear picture of living costs and plan how you'll handle money during your first few weeks. Finance
First Steps After Arrival β
- Register at your local ward/city office - This is your first priority. You'll receive your residence card (ε¨ηγ«γΌγ) and get set up in the local system.
- Open a bank account - Japan Post Bank (γγγ‘γιθ‘) is the most foreigner-friendly option with branches everywhere, including inside post offices.
- Get a phone/SIM card - You'll need a phone number for just about everything. Phone & Internet
- Enroll in National Health Insurance - If your employer doesn't cover you, sign up for NHI at your ward office. This is mandatory.
- Set up utilities - Gas, electric, water, and internet. Some places come with utilities partially set up, but don't count on it. Utilities
